Tablecloth as Toolkit (Manchester Version)

2023

Tablecloth as Toolkit Manchester Version, Owen Griffiths and Alessandra Saviotti

Commissioned by The Whitworth Gallery, for Economics the Blockbuster.

Tablecloth as a toolkit - Manchester version, is a generative artwork created with curator and artist Alessandra Saviotti. It was designed and made to host a series of meals and workshops with members of the community, local growing projects, schools, local government officials, climate activists and economists were held. These meals were held in the Office of Arte Útil, throughout Economics the Blockbuster and Manchester International Festival. We used case studies included in the Arte Útil archive and local growing projects as models to inspire new ideas and explore intersectional issues of food and nutritional poverty with that of poverty, racial and economic justice. Records of the conversations were recorded and shared as well as written on the blackboard in the space, exploring intentions and ideas gathered during the exhibition and beyond.

How can an artwork, garden or museum model economies of social justice?
